Away From The Kitchen

Hello Sweets,

I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know why there has been a lack of posts the last couple of days.  On top of what I normally go through, I have been extremely lethargic and nauseous, which means I haven't been eating or creating :(  But I am resting in hopes to get back into the blogging tomorrow!  Until next time.................

My Geeky Side

Hello Sweets,

I feel awful that I haven't had a recipe posted in a long time, but to be perfectly honest, I am not feeling well at all.  I've been laid up all day today with a horrible migraine, and if it wasn't for that I would be in the kitchen right now (I actually started my recipe post last night, see I meant to).  So I thought I would take this time off from the kitchen and give you an insight to another aspect that makes me, me :).

It is no secret that Nathan is extremely smart, he can build a computer from scratch, has an extensive knowledge of history, and he knows pretty much everything you can about Star Wars, StarTrek, or any other scifi show.  When he first met me, he did not know about my scifi side, but when he did find out he was ecstatic lol.  We watch movies and shows together all the time, ones that most girlfriends would probably rather be doing something else, but I love trying new things, so when he suggests something new I usually jump at the chance.  When I was younger I played a lot of text based games, my favorites being Hugo's House of Horrors and Jane of the Jungle lol, but I never really got into role playing games as I got older.  Well when Star Wars The Old Republic came out last year, I knew that Nathan would be "unreachable" at times.  He asked me if I wanted to play, but kept resisting (can you see where this is going).  Well a few days ago when Nathan got me my new laptop, we made sure it could run the game so I could join him in some quality gaming, and surprisingly I've enjoyed it :)
This is my character, Safran :)

Now don't get me wrong and Nathan will verify this, I've had my moments of extreme frustration but I haven't gamed in so long and it has changed immensely.  However, I find myself loosing track of time and really enjoying how interactive it is, I have to make all my own decisions to determine my story and try to stay on the "light" side.  It definitely isn't the easiest thing to get the hang of if you haven't gamed before, but I guarantee your boyfriend will think you are even more hot behind the blue glow of a computer gaming screen ;) lol.

I know I am always bragging about how great Nathan really is but he always does small sweet gestures that have big meanings behind them.  When I started this post I told you I have been under the weather, well let me tell you how great he really is.  Nathan and I are huge Big Bang Theory fans, and while I'm laying in bed resting he turns around and hands me a soft kitty plush that actually sings the soft kitty song.
Isn't it the cutest!

For those of you not familiar with the soft kitty song and meaning, let me explain it to you; the character Sheldon, when he was younger and sick, his mother would sing him the soft kitty song to help him feel better.  Here is the song;  soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur.  happy kitty, sleepy kitty pur pur pur.  Lol I know it is silly but the gesture made me smile and just cements it even more that I have the best boyfriend ever!  Until next time.......

Recipe Box: filled with ideas and love ;)

Hello Sweets,

I hope you all had a fantastic Friday, you're finally at the weekend and you can finally kick your feet up!  I on the other hand, am still sick as a dog :( I have almost completely lost my voice now, so I have been drinking plenty of hot green tea and orange juice in hopes of boosting my immune system.  Last night was awful, I could not sleep and then at about 4am I broke out with a fever, and it took forever to break it.  I don't have the fever anymore but the sore throat is there so I am still resting :)

Since my appetite is pretty much none existent, I obviously have not been cooking any new creations in the kitchen, I thought today's post should be about my lovely recipe box and it's story :)  As I have told you guys in previous posts, my love of cooking and baking started young in the home, but ironically I didn't start a recipe book or box, just watched carefully over my grandmothers or mothers shoulders.  I have always envied my grandmother's recipe box, it's one of those really old metal ones, big enough for only index cards or clippings, and in a lovely shade of army green.  Nothing special about it, but what's inside is where all the magic is :) and I have asked (and hope), that one day it will be mine so that I can keep the family recipes going.  So when I was seventeen, I moved out on my own, and my apartment didn't look like your typical young adults, it looked like a home and I took pride in that.  I would have family and friends over for dinner, where I would make a meal for everyone and sometimes even a dessert, but still I didn't write any of my recipes down and store them anywhere.  Then after a couple more moves in the city, I came across this promotional product (I think I saw it on TV) that I just couldn't pass up, my love of the kitchen had grown so much that I wanted to own this product!  It's called Grandma's Kitchen (very exciting that they are still around with a website too!), and when I started with them back in 2002 it was a monthly deal (for a small fee) where they sent you different recipes, from breakfast to desserts and everything in between, to add to your recipe box!
I like the cute little paisley prints on the box
Still plenty of room inside, which is why I keep lots of extra index cards, and yes I do have everything organized by categories lol. (see the book I made for Nathan on Valentines day in the background, it's "our" love story)

Now I just looked them up online today for this article, to see if they are still around, and they definitely are :)  But their website is a phenomenal tool for any kitchen lover, they have all sorts of recipes and even explain different kitchen terms and the importance of each step.  I am so glad I looked them up online, because it is a great tool to have on hand for inspiration, or even if I am not sure about something I know I can count on Grandma Betty (author) ;)  What makes them even more amazing is that they have an app for the iPhone!!!  You know I've already downloaded it lol.  The one thing I truly loved about this program (I'm no longer in it) is that it has diversity, she doesn't just do the typical southern cooking, but a little bit of everything.  Can you tell I definitely recommend you guys check them out??  Lol, so what are you waiting for, click here!

Well sweets, my energy level has just dropped again. so it's another short but sweet post.  I have already decided to make myself a delicious dinner tomorrow, for me and for you guys too!  No I'm not inviting you over lol, but I will have another little Canuckette creation tomorrow to share with all of you, actually one of my favorite unconventional ways to make steak :)  Until next time.........

Stay sweet,

Sick as a Dog :(

Hello Sweets,

I hope you all had a wonderful Thursday, you are after all one step closer to the weekend!  I, however, woke up today feeling like I had swallowed a pine cone :(, so unfortunately my blog will be short but sweet today since I need to rest up my immune system.

Waking up sick today reminded me of when I first got diagnosed, the doctors told me that I could get sick easier than the average person because my immune system is confused with everything else my body is fighting and not sleeping properly.  But it was easier for me to deal with being sick then over now, and it's weird because it's not because I did things differently, it's because I had my best fur friend Roxy a lab/collie/shepherd mix, to cuddle me when I was away from Nathan.  Roxy is no longer with me (that is a long story that I don't like rehashing), which has been hard for me, considering it's been almost a year (December 17th to be exact) I thought it would get easier too.  But when something or someone has a huge impact in your life,  it always feels like it was yesterday.  I wanted to share some pictures and happy memories with all of you, because even though she is not with me anymore she never leaves my thoughts :)  She was literally that great of a dog!
3mths old, just brought home <3
We used to take long walks on the trails by the river, and she would always go for a swim lol she's just like me, loves the water :)
I went on a girls trip to Las Vegas and someone definitely missed me, instant cuddles when I walked in.
Sick days became more often, and she never left my side.  Best dog you can ask for!
Last night together :( we watched Marley and Me (our favorite), and I let her finish the peanut butter, still in the jar lol

Although thinking of her still brings tears to my eyes, I can still smile through them because we have so many great memories together.  Every animal I have ever owned holds a place in my heart (I love fur babies), but I think Roxy holds an extra large spot, she was with me everyday during one of my sickest parts of this whole ordeal, and if it was a really bad day she wouldn't leave my side.  I love my baby girl still, and I'll never forget her :) xoxox
My all time favorite picture of my girl :)

But you know I am fortunate enough to have some great people in my life and even a new fur baby, Nathan has been kind enough to share his dog with me; little baby Bear a Pomeranian.  And who can forget my amazing nephew Miguel :) aka my little raspberry burrito (inside joke), and I just remember the good times with Roxy and create new memories with the ones that are here today!
The love of my life and I at a Dallas Stars game last year
My adorable burrito, in auntie Jemmy's sweater!
Sleepy little Bearries

Well sweets, this is all the energy I can muster up for now, I am going to make me another cup of green tea with a touch of honey and cuddle up in bed and watch some of my favorite shows (American Horror Story).

Until next time.............

Stay sweet,
